Place Value is huge concept in second grade that sets the foundation for all of their future math learning. It is essential that students have a strong grasp of how our number system works. Students need hands on manipulatives to understand how the base ten system works. These place value discs will help students learn the concepts in a concrete way before applying to standard number form. Students will be able physically move the discs to each place value as they represent hundreds, tens, and ones. I have a diverse group of students this year. The curriculum we use focuses heavily on pictures. Many of my students are not developmentally ready for this abstract concept. I want all learners in my room to have equal access to the standards. These discs will allow students to access our standards at their current level of understanding. We will be using the sheet protectors to create place value mats so that they can further visualize how the place value system works . I am excited to see the growth my students make with these concepts this year!
