Learning English as a second language is a challenge. I want to help my students better understand the English language through TIME magazines. These magazines will be used weekly as we learn how to read, create authentic oral discussions, and provide background knowledge for our writing. TIME magazines provide students with connections to current events. ELL students can relate to these current events based off their previous learning experiences. For example, my students already know about elephants based on lessons they learned in their home country. Since they already know some information about elephants, providing them with these magazines gives them resources to learn more about this animal though the English language. Having a variety of magazine subscriptions will provide resources for all my students, Kindergarten through 6th grade. Keeping these magazines organized and accessible for students will make these a valuable resource.
