Your generosity has given my students both print and digital access to Junior Scholastic, Action, and ScienceWorld, and these magazines have quickly become some of the most useful resources in our room. There is something different about handing a student an actual magazine and watching them flip through the pages, choose an article, and start reading. They feel different from a traditional curriculum anthology, and that difference matters. The magazines make reading feel more authentic and connected to the world outside of school.\r\n\r\nOne of the things I appreciate most is the incredible variety of texts and the teaching resources that come with each issue. Students encounter short, accessible articles, graphic novels, political cartoons, infographics, maps, graphs, argumentative writing, fiction, and so much more. That variety means there is almost always something that catches a student's interest or gives them an accessible way into a challenging topic. The lessons also provide organizers, projects, reading supports, and activities at different levels, which allows me to meet students where they are while still giving them meaningful opportunities to build reading, writing, critical-thinking, and content-area skills. ScienceWorld has been especially valuable because our students do not currently have a science curriculum, while Junior Scholastic gives me social studies materials that are much easier to pick up and use with my students. Our regular social studies curriculum is wonderful for many students, but it can be difficult to jump into when students need more flexibility and scaffolding. These magazines have helped fill that gap beautifully.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources give my students choices. I have students who will eagerly pick up a magazine because they are fascinated by a particular topic, while others are drawn in by a graphic novel, cartoon, map, or short article. Once they find something that interests them, they are reading—and that is a wonderful thing to see. Thank you for giving my students engaging, accessible materials that help them see themselves as readers while also building the skills they need to understand the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1779371071183,"projectUrl":"project/high-interest-learning-for-at-risk-middl/10282937/","projectTitle":"High-Interest Learning for At-Risk Middle Schoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kaste","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2329443_orig.jpg?crop=2669,2670,x0,y186&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778513312276","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-kaste"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_53420","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":458,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"24.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":68.7,"schoolId":53420,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about H.L.
