Share a specific classroom project or moment.\r\nThe pencils and highlighters have become essential tools in our AP Language and Composition classroom, especially during rhetorical analysis work. Students use color-coded highlighting systems to annotate complex nonfiction texts — one color for appeals to ethos, another for pathos, another for logos. During a recent close reading of a Martin Luther King Jr. speech, the room was completely silent except for the sound of highlighters moving across pages. That kind of focused, independent annotation is exactly the thinking AP Lang demands.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nThey were genuinely thrilled — and it showed immediately in how they engaged. Several students went straight to work setting up their own color-coding keys in their notebooks. One student said, \"Now I can actually see the argument being built.\" That comment captured everything — these supplies aren't just convenient, they're making abstract rhetorical concepts visible and concrete for students who are working toward college-level literacy skills.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nWe are currently building toward our synthesis essay unit, where students must read, annotate, and integrate multiple sources into a cohesive argument of their own. The next step is a source annotation workshop where students will use their highlighters to identify each author's central claim, key evidence, and rhetorical choices before drafting. These supplies will carry us all the way through to the AP exam in May, where strong annotation habits are one of the most critical skills students can bring to the test.","fullyFundedDate":1659138186631,"projectUrl":"project/new-beginnings/6368871/","projectTitle":"New Beginnings","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8011653_orig.jpg?crop=652,652,x0,y30&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1651007460532","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-f-walker"},{"teacherId":3738193,"projectId":7736576,"letterContent":"It was an amazing experience to receive so many cool resources for my students. It was such a confidence booster to have visual and engaging materials that they could use as scaffolding in vocabulary and story retelling. I was able to create a independent reading space that kids were eager to utilize for warm-ups and sponge times.
