Students used the magnetic tiles, Play-Doh, and kinetic sand to engineer model structures that could withstand \"earthquake\" shaking on our testing table.\r\n\r\nIt was amazing to watch them experiment, rebuild, and problem-solve together. Students who are usually quiet became leaders as they explained why certain shapes added stability, while others jumped right into hands-on testing and adjustments. This project has transformed reading in my classroom by giving our sophomores access to The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo—a story that reflects their voices and experiences. Through Xiomara's journey, students will explore identity, voice, and self-expression by writing their own poems that reflect their truths. Many who once struggled to connect with reading now see themselves as writers and thinkers, finding meaning and confidence through literature that feels real and relevant.\r\n\r\nReading should feel alive in the classroom. Students are beginning to discuss, annotate, and want to keep reading The Poet X! One student, who rarely read before now, journals daily, while another recently wrote a powerful poem about her identity. These moments show the lasting impact of your generosity. In a time when public schools—especially here in Rochester, New York—are working hard to re-engage students with the love of learning, your support has reignited a love for reading, creativity, and community in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1760141523637,"projectUrl":"project/reading-to-fuel-empathic-humans/9634529/","projectTitle":"Reading to Fuel Empathic Humans!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Oliveiri","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3917920_orig.jpg?crop=686,686,x0,y114&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755730594457","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3917920"},{"teacherId":1720340,"projectId":9873690,"letterContent":"I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your generous support through DonorsChoose. The act of searching for pieces together created an easy entry point for conversation, helping students who might not normally interact feel comfortable joining in.\r\n\r\nBeyond the cognitive benefits, the puzzles fostered a sense of community. Completing a puzzle required patience, communication, and collective effort, and students experienced firsthand how their individual contributions helped the group succeed. With hands-on access to these tools, students explored how digital designs translate into tangible objects, experimented with structural thinking, and built confidence in their ability to create. The materials also democratized participation—students who had never used fabrication tools before were able to prototype, iterate, and understand the core principles of additive manufacturing in an accessible, age-appropriate format.\r\n\r\nIn addition to these classroom experiences, our school partnered with the Rochester Institute of Technology for a one-day field experience focused on advanced 3D printing at the collegiate level. Students had a chance to observe industrial-grade equipment, learned about design processes used in engineering and product development, and interact with faculty and college students who work with these technologies every day. In addition, they were able to use 3D printing technology to create a laser-precise keychain with their name. The funds donated to this project built a bigger connection beyond what happens in our STEM club. It expands their technical understanding but also helps them envision future academic and career pathways in engineering, fabrication, and emerging technologies.","fullyFundedDate":1751052529613,"projectUrl":"project/3d-dreams-in-the-making/9272563/","projectTitle":"3D Dreams in the Making","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Liu","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9085453_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x125,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1696816426898","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9085453"},{"teacherId":1720340,"projectId":9857146,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for considering supporting our classroom.
