Students are also developing responsibility as they help water and care for the garden. Instead of simply seeing the plant life cycle in a book or on a screen, they will be able to watch it unfold in front of them, from a tiny seed to a mature plant that produces food.\r\n\r\nAs our garden continues to grow, students will observe and document changes, compare different types of plants, investigate how weather and environmental conditions affect growth, and eventually experience the excitement of harvesting what they have grown. These garden beds will allow us to repeat these hands-on science experiences with students year after year. Just as importantly, they are learning how to perform as an ensemble, listening to one another, following a conductor, keeping a steady beat, and understanding how their individual part contributes to the sound of the entire group.\r\n\r\nAs we continue, students will add new notes, rhythms, and increasingly challenging songs to their repertoire. My goal is for them to develop the confidence to look at a piece of music and realize, \"I know how to read this, and I can play it!\" For some, this experience may even inspire them to continue with band or another instrument in the future. There is something incredibly special about watching a beginner work to produce those first sounds and realize, little by little, \"I can actually play this!\" These instruments are helping students develop not only musicianship, but also patience, perseverance, responsibility, and confidence.\r\n\r\nNext, our students will continue building their range, learning new notes and rhythms, and combining those skills to perform their first pieces together as a band. As we practice rhythms as a class, they are learning to watch the conductor, listen to the musicians around them, stay together, and recognize how their individual part becomes part of a larger musical experience. The tongue drums have also given us a wonderful way to explore melody, pitch, and improvisation while allowing students to experiment and create music of their own.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the year, we will build on these experiences by reading increasingly complex rhythms, creating our own musical patterns, and combining different instruments to perform as an ensemble. These resources will be used across multiple grade levels and will continue providing hands-on musical experiences for students for years to come.
