Having both handheld and classroom globes has ignited passion for geography that continues through our non-fiction book clubs about ancient cultures. All of the maps have been fun to get into kids hands so they could use them in presentations and to find where both modern and ancient countries are in relation to us.\r\n\r\nMy class uses jobs and students who applied to be \"museum curators\" and \"librarians\" are LOVING the history + culture corner. They even created a \"place of the day\" and put a suggestion list currently 12 destinations long that other students can fill out. The museum curators will then find that city, state, or country on our globes and maps and highlight it for other students. \r\n\r\nThe series of bilingual books and language picture dictionaries were impossible to keep OUT of kids hands. My students love that they can have a seat that allows them to move, but still sit in a chair and have back support. I've even had several coworkers choose to use a wobble chair when we have meetings in my classroom!\r\nThe surf desks for floor seating have also been a big hit! My floor-loving students really like that these new seats provide a hard surface for working. They find it much easier and more comfortable than bending over to write on their legs, or even laying down to work on the floor. The attached cushions make sitting on the hard floor more comfortable as well.\r\nThank you again for your generosity. Students also practice writing skills by writing a daily response to the book. We are currently working on paraphrasing and including text evidence in our responses.\r\nWe are currently in the middle of reading Hatchet as a class. Thank you for making it possible!\r\nAbout 60 students were able to each create and take home their own puzzle cube. After a short lesson on aspects of 3 dimensional shapes, students were given time to explore how many different shapes they could make out of small cubes. They had the opportunity to share their ideas with both small groups and the whole class. Finally, they were able to glue their cubes together to make seven unique shapes. Once those were dry, students were able to try to put their shapes together to create a 3x3x3 puzzle cube. \r\nThe perseverance they demonstrated while trying to fit them together into the larger cube was incredible! Students who had easily given up on many academic tasks throughout the year refused to give up on this! They puzzled with it until they figured it out. In fact, some of them have kept their pieces at school and pull them out to fidget with when they are feeling stuck on something in class. They will sit and try to build the cube while also trying to puzzle through a difficult academic task. The project was delayed a bit because of confusion with our warehouse. On an Inservice day, my team went to pick out the library once we made our request for library materials with Donor's Choose. Yet, we almost did not get the library shelves because our selection was not clear with the warehouse. Thus, when the chairs arrived, we left them packaged up until we could get the library shelves. Thankfully, the details got straightened out! We unpackaged the chairs when the library shelves arrived. The kids responded well to the chairs. They knew right away what the chairs were for and sat down to do their reading. We also received other items that help support the sensory needs for our students. Many used them to calm down so they could engage in their lessons. \r\n\r\nWhen the students saw the materials, they quickly manipulated the chairs so they could sit in them. They often used the chairs to read, as well as provide a place to sit and engage in learning videos. One of the items was a sensory sock. It was a favorite among the class. The kids wanted to use the item all the time, so we provided opportunities to share the sock and keep the kids engaged. \r\n\r\nThe next step in our classroom is to teach them self-control in managing their bodies. We are currently doing center rotations for reading and math. The kids can choose a reward for engaging in their lessons. The donations received allow them to have highly engaging items that they can choose, so they will sit and work for a brief time before being allowed to play.
