Every child has access to the same materials and the same opportunities to participate, create, and feel successful.\r\nAlready, these resources are being woven into our daily learning. Our journals and notebooks give students a place to see their growth as readers, writers, and mathematicians throughout the year. Our art and hands-on materials allow them to demonstrate their thinking in creative ways, while our whiteboard supplies make it possible for students to practice skills, take risks, make mistakes, erase, and try again-all important parts of learning in first grade.\r\nMost importantly, your generosity sends a powerful message to my students: there are people beyond the walls of our classroom who believe in them and care about their education.\r\nThank you again for investing in my first graders and helping me create a classroom where students have the materials they need to feel prepared, inspired, and excited to learn each day. At the end of lessons, students use these materials to decompress, process what they have learned, and allow the information from each lesson to \"marinate and soak in.\" These activities create a calm transition while encouraging creativity, focus, and meaningful connection.\r\n\r\nOver the past few days, I have watched first, second, third, and sixth grade students use Brain Flakes, magnetic sticks, and Picasso Tiles to build and create new structures. Today, an entire class of 22 sixth graders arrived talkative and extremely antsy. Several students asked to use a fidget, and within moments, every student had one in hand. They were quietly engaged, their eyes remained on me, and they were able to listen and participate without becoming distracted. It was incredible to see these tools help an energetic group regulate themselves and remain ready to learn. Students in Pre-K through sixth grade—including my EAC (Enhanced Autism Class) and PAC (Pre-K Autism Class) classes—have been enjoying these engaging resources. They are entertained, understand the humor, participate in discussions, and, most importantly, retain the information they are learning.\r\n\r\nOne moment has already stayed in my heart. Today, an EAC student who rarely slows down lay perfectly still and silent on our classroom carpet while watching a BrainPOP Jr. video about the human heart and its purpose and function. Each time Moby made his robot sound, the student mimicked it and let out a small giggle. It was utterly magical. Your generosity has made it possible for students with a wide range of learning needs to access important health and SEL concepts in a way that is engaging, accessible, and meaningful. Students are excited to select a special reward, and these small moments of recognition help them feel proud, encouraged, and motivated to continue making healthy and responsible choices.\r\n\r\nThe fidgets have been especially valuable for students who need additional support with focus, self-regulation, sensory needs, or managing stress. Because this project provided enough fidgets for students to keep one when needed, children who did not already have one—or who may not have the means to purchase one—can use these tools at school, at home, in the car, or wherever support is needed. There were lots of smiles and comments about how organized and colorful our classroom had become. The birthday crowns have already made several students feel extra special and celebrated on their big day, creating memories they proudly shared with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe storage bins, file boxes, and index card holders have helped our students become more independent by giving them easy access to materials and helping them keep our classroom organized. Students enjoy being able to quickly find what they need and return materials to the correct place, allowing us to spend more time learning and less time searching for supplies.\r\n\r\nOur utility cart has become an important organizational tool that allows us to keep frequently used materials nearby and accessible during small group instruction and centers.\r\n\r\nThe calm-down corner resources have had a particularly meaningful impact. Students are learning to recognize and communicate their emotions using the feelings chart and visuals. That simple sense of ownership has helped create an even stronger feeling of belonging in our classroom.\r\n\r\nEvery two weeks, more than 800 students enter our Health and Social Emotional Learning space, and this carpet is truly the heart of it all. We use it daily for direct instruction, morning meetings, and community circles where students practice sharing, listening, and building relationships. It has become a calm, welcoming place where students feel comfortable engaging and being themselves.\r\n\r\nOne recent moment perfectly captured its impact. A group of 5th graders finished a project early and asked to move to the carpet. They began calling out colors and body parts—like a game of Twister—for their classmates still working at tables. The energy in the room shifted in the best way. Students were laughing, engaged, and motivated—and the remaining students finished their work faster than any other group this week. The carpet created space for movement, connection, and joy in learning.\r\n\r\nThe carpet has also made a meaningful difference for our diverse learners, including ESOL and Special Education students. The defined seating spaces provide structure, reduce distractions, and support focus—especially for students who benefit from clear boundaries and routine.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to use this space for collaborative activities, role-playing scenarios, and social-emotional learning experiences that help students build real-life skills. From morning meeting to read-alouds to math mini-lessons, students are able to sit comfortably, focus their attention, and engage more fully in learning without the distractions that come from sitting on a hard floor or squeezing into tight spaces.\r\nThe rug has also helped us build stronger classroom routines. Students know exactly where to come, how to sit, and how to be ready to learn. This consistency has improved transitions, increased listening skills, and allowed us to spend more time learning and less time managing movement.\r\nMost importantly, the rug has helped strengthen our classroom community. It's where we share stories, solve problems together, celebrate successes, and practice being kind classmates. They all kept leaning down to touch it, exclaiming, \"It's so clean!\" and \"It's so soft!\" For many of my students, having something brand new and beautiful that belongs specifically to their community makes them feel incredibly seen and valued. They eagerly waited for me to assign them their very own carpet spot.\r\n\r\nThis rug has quickly become the true \"heart\" of our classroom. It is a place where our classroom family grows closer every single day. Our rug is our home base for so many exciting lessons: read alouds, math count arounds, show and tell circles, science investigations, and so much more. Some of our highlights for the first month at our new rug was a visit from a guide dog in training, a pumpkin investigation, and a space to give thanks as we discussed the upcoming holidays. During choice time, it's the favorite spot for building, playing, and learning how to share with one another. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, this rug will continue to be our space to gather and build our knowledge together. We have our next science unit coming up: weather. Our plan is to journal/graph the weather every day together at our carpet space.
