We received four griddles to use in our Family and Consumer Science classroom, and they have already been put to great use in multiple classes, including Culinary Arts, Family and Consumer Science 7, and Food and Nutrition.\r\n\r\nRecently, students used the griddles to make \"elevated\" grilled cheese sandwiches in both Culinary Arts and Food and Nutrition. This lab encouraged students to think creatively about how to improve a classic dish. Some increased the nutritional value by adding spinach, tomatoes, avocado, and green peppers, while others experimented with garlic butter and a variety of cheeses.\r\n\r\nOur 7th-grade students will soon use the griddles to make French toast—a great lab that helps them practice measurement and recipe-reading skills.\r\n\r\nHaving these griddles in the classroom has made our labs much more efficient. They allow students to cook multiple sandwiches or items at once, rather than waiting to take turns at the stovetop. Since we were a good portion of the way through the school year when the items were received we were only able to use each of them once as we were doing some lab activities to review for our PA Keystone Exams. \r\n\r\nThe students learned about osmosis by completing the \"Egg Osmosis Lab\" where they began with a regular chicken egg from the grocery store then dissolved its shell and placed it in a liquid of their choice. They needed to weigh the egg multiple times throughout this process to determine if the net movement of fluid was into or out of their egg, and in turn they could determine if the liquid that they chose was hypotonic or hypertonic. Without the accuracy and precision of the balance that you sent this would not have been possible.\r\n\r\nWe also reviewed enzyme function through the use of a lab where they tested different substances that contained the enzyme catalase (chicken liver, potatoes, etc.) and they evaluated the rate of reaction with peroxide in different conditions, including different temperatures, and the hot plate was crucial for carrying out this portion of the experiment. \r\n\r\nI teach mostly lower-level Biology students, and labs are by far their favorite days in class, and these new supplies will be useful for many labs in the future. They were very excited to see a big box with new supplies when it arrived, and many students anxiously asked when we would get to do a lab to use them. Both tools are versatile and very helpful for various types of activities and data collection, and I can't wait to see all of the ways that I will be able to put them to use in future years in my classroom. Our next step is to explore how spectral analysis is used in real-world applications like astronomy and forensic science. I got behind on everything, but I am finally finishing up! \r\n I had taught Spanish for over twenty years and I decided that I needed a change about two years ago, so I when an English position was open, I decided to take it. I found the challenge of trying to connect to tenth grade boys in a rural area. Most of them are not interested in Hemingway or Shakespeare, so I felt I needed to find a novel that they could connect with. \"Lord of the Flies\" is perfect because it contains many of the things that my students have a passion for, hunting, fishing and survival. When they enjoy a topic, they are much more motivated to participate and read the book. The greatest feeling this year has been when a student said- \"That is the first book that I read in school that I actually liked.\" This was literally music to my ears! I was so excited! \r\n I hope that this will instill in my students a life long love of reading or at least learning new things and appreciating authors and literature.
