Students are learning that running a successful business involves much more than simply having a product to sell. They are developing skills in customer service, budgeting, inventory management, pricing, marketing, teamwork, and responsibility while using the coffee maker as part of their hands-on learning.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the coffee maker and realized they would actually be able to use it as part of their business class, they were incredibly excited! It immediately created a new level of enthusiasm and ownership. Students enjoy preparing coffee orders and seeing how the different roles within a business work together. Even more importantly, they are learning valuable communication, problem-solving, and workplace skills that will benefit them well beyond middle school.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue expanding the project and giving students greater responsibility for the operation of their classroom business. Students will continue learning about calculating costs and profits, managing supplies, advertising, fulfilling orders, and providing excellent customer service. Each day students would ask can I check my plant. Students were able to see some of the seed pod on some plants where it grew from the seeds.\r\nWe sampled chamomile tea, since one of the herbs we grew was chamomile. Some liked the tea but others not so much. We only had a bit because they did research and we knew it could make them sleepy. \r\nStudents did reports on the herb they got assigned. Several were suprised to see that it was used to season some of their favorite foods. We had so much fun exploring this concept and making the DNA necklaces that I forgot to even take pictures of them! I hope that I can do this same activity later with another class. \r\n\r\nThe Knex kits we have only used once, but I can use them over and over, unlike the DNA necklace kits.
