We use them during close reading to highlight key details, underline important ideas, circle unfamiliar vocabulary, and write notes in the margins about questions, connections, and reactions. The goal is to slow down our thinking and truly understand what the text is saying. During a recent nonfiction lesson, students color coded the text to identify main ideas and supporting evidence before discussing it with partners. I was able to hear them explain their thinking and defend why they marked certain parts of the text. The supplies did not just make the pages colorful, they made their thinking visible and strengthened their comprehension.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited. Having their own highlighters and annotation tools made them feel prepared and empowered. For some students, it was the first time they had personal supplies specifically for active reading. That ownership immediately increased engagement and focus during our lessons.\r\n\r\nAs we continue, students are using their annotated texts to help them write about their reading. After marking important evidence, they use those highlights and notes to craft written responses, short constructed responses, and longer analytical paragraphs. The next step is helping them move from strong annotations to more detailed written explanations that clearly support their ideas with text evidence.
