I particularly like to highlight classic literature, self help, and banned books (or at least banned elsewhere). \r\nAlthough we have a great media center with great books, and our district has never tried to censor student reading, I think sometimes it is good to make the books available, for free, without the process of checking them out, to encourage some readers. This small skills will enable them to be able to hem and mend there own clothes and not have to pay someone to do it. They also got to see the transition from a pattern to final costume and watch it move on stage during the schools play. Some have since found an greater interest in joining more actively out drama department and drama club in the next years.\r\n\r\nDuring the under taking of the making of costumes the students were able to understand how body measurements translated to clothes sizes. This was best demonstrated with the dressform that was purchased with the funds. \r\n Working on the sewing machine was very easy and fun for a few of the students both in the class and in our drama club. We have facilitated peer groups, worked individually with students based on THEIR selection of the resources available, and held events celebrating good mental health practices. I have shared a combination of photos highlighting our activities.\r\n\r\nTeenagers are especially sensitive to discussing mental health because they have heard and read so many negative ideas about people with mental health needs and their community doesn't invest as frequently in these resources. By having a variety of materials at hand we have invited them to personalize to their own journey. When students pick up the resources on self-esteem they are often surprised to be led through a discussion about how authenticity and a strong sense of self can often them ward off some mental health conditions. The resources on substance abuse and anger management have been utilized repeatedly since we received them. The coloring pages were used up in less than a month!\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous contribution to the student at Thomas Jefferson High School.
