Your support has allowed us to refresh and enhance a space that plays a vital role in helping our students regulate their emotions, engage more fully in learning, and develop essential sensory and self-regulation skills.\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, we are able to replace several well-loved items that have served our students for years. Our steamroller, one of the most frequently used tools in the room, remains in excellent shape, but its tension bands needed replacement to continue providing effective proprioceptive input—your gift made that possible. We also now have a clean, durable new rug to replace the one that has weathered countless spills, projects, and creative moments from our preschoolers.\r\n\r\nYour support also brought exciting new additions to our space. The classroom was transformed into what seemed more like a children's museum than preschool. \r\n\r\nThese materials did not just teach about how things work, but it allowed for a more playful approach to teaching basic pre- literacy and math skills as well. We blended sounds using the inclined plane to slide, slide, slippity slide the sounds together! We extended read alouds about Henri Matisse's art using our own lever + wedge (scissor) to make collage art, and used a marker on a stick to draw with a lever from a make believe sick bed, just like Matisse! For math, we created an adding machine using two inclined planes that were tilted towards a counting basket. These are just a few examples of ways in which this project transformed our classroom for six weeks, and brought learning to life for the four-year old children in our class.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the year, I always ask what was the favorite study for the year. I'm able to rotate materials and provide a lot of choice. To give a concrete example, right now, we are studying insects. The students have insect counters they use in the pattern tray provided by this grant. They are using the counting tray to count up to 30 ants to go along with our marching ants story telling. We use the unifix cube counter to reinforce the concept of the +1 pattern in counting, and estimate then measure how many cubes long various insects are. The best part is that they don't need much, if any, teacher facilitation to meet their learning goals.
