I had so much fun creating these end of year gifts for my students. It was very emotional for me because this was me second year with this class. The growth these students showed, the amount of strength and resilience they have shown will forever be engrained in my memory of them. I was so happy to give them gifts that would allow them to look back on our happy memories. The effect has been lasting. I still have students that come up to me and tell me they have their photo album. Every day I see them walk by with the water cup in their bookbag that I gave them. I am so glad to know they have these happy reminders of how wonderful first and second grade was for them. The positive reinforcement yields positive behavior in the classroom. \r\nThe drawers have been so helpful! Even though they are smaller than I anticipated, they worked out perfect. I use the drawers to organize different color crayons. This is perfect because sometimes we only need a specific color like black or yellow, and if students are missing the color, they go to the drawers to pick only the color they need. The new light-green velvet bag chairs have created a cozy reading corner where students eagerly curl up with books during literacy centers. One of my favorite moments was watching two students settle into the chairs with their sight-word readers, proudly taking turns helping each other sound out tricky words.\r\n\r\nThe Crayola Classpack has also been a huge hit—students used the crayons to illustrate their personal narratives with bright, bold colors. Our treasure chest and new fidget toys have become a central part of our reward system, helping motivate positive behavior and celebrate student growth. The birthday bracelets, pencils, and stickers have added excitement to our classroom celebrations, making each student feel special on their big day.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nThey were over the moon! When the bag chairs came out of the box, the class gasped and immediately asked, \"Can we sit in them?!\" Several students hugged them because they were so soft. The reusable neon water bottles brought another wave of excitement—students immediately chose their favorite colors and proudly filled them up. When they saw the treasure chest filled with fidgets, birthday goodies, and new supplies, the room was full of smiles, chatter, and pure joy.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nWe are now using the new materials to support our ongoing literacy and behavior-incentive systems. Students will continue using the bag chairs during independent reading and writing time to help build stamina and comfort. The crayons and glue sticks will be used in our upcoming nonfiction writing project, where students will create their own \"All About...\" books with illustrations and diagrams.\r\n\r\nThe treasure chest and fidget toys will support our next Social-Emotional Learning goal as students practice teamwork, positive choices, and responsibility. The water bottles will continue helping students stay hydrated throughout the day—something especially helpful during transitions and outdoor activities.\r\n\r\nYour support has made a meaningful difference in our classroom. The incentives you funded have fundamentally transformed the atmosphere of our reading block. This project wasn't just about acquiring items; it was about investing in motivation, self-esteem, and the belief that effort leads to reward. My students are now using these new resources as powerful, tangible acknowledgments of their progress toward their reading goals. \r\n A key component of our system is encouraging consistent work in the iReady reading program. The small prizes are directly used to reward students for lessons passed in iReady each week, turning computer time into an exciting challenge. Students who once rushed through the diagnostic or struggled to focus on the individualized lessons are now deeply engaged, knowing that successful completion is celebrated. Students are also able to earn points when they reach reading goals in fluency, comprehension during weekly progress monitoring.\r\n This project is essential because it specifically targets consistent effort in the iReady program, which provides personalized, adaptive instruction crucial for closing achievement gaps. For instance, successfully passing five iReady lessons in a week earns a student a choice of a smaller prize in our Reading Store. But for students who achieve larger milestones—like passing 25 or even 50 iReady lessons over a grading period—we have set aside the larger, specialty items you donated. The sight of these premium items serves as a powerful long-term goal, driving sustained, high-quality effort in the program. Furthermore, these incentives have become instrumental in celebrating the \"lightbulb\" moments of comprehension, whether they occur during iReady instruction or other reading goals . When a student successfully uses context clues to define a new vocabulary word or summarizes a complex chapter with exceptional clarity, they are immediately recognized and rewarded with one of the small prizes. This immediate positive reinforcement has dramatically increased their willingness to take risks and engage with challenging texts. It has shifted their focus from simply finishing the book to genuinely understanding the content, turning reading from a task into a measurable achievement. The overall ripple effect of this heightened engagement is evident in our class-wide reading scores, which are showing a noticeable, positive trend upward since the \"Reading Store\" was introduced. Your support has fostered a culture where reading is not just expected, but actively desired and celebrated.\r\n The reaction of my students when they first saw the materials was absolutely priceless. The room went completely silent—a feat in itself! When I opened the lid, revealing the colorful assortment of fun novelty items, a collective gasp went through the room, followed by a burst of excited whispers. It felt like Christmas morning. They immediately began pointing out the items they wanted, asking, \"How do we earn that?\" and \"When can we start?\" That initial excitement has not waned; in fact, the desire to earn these small items has become a daily driving force. It took something that can sometimes feel abstract—like improving a reading score or passing an iReady lesson—and made it immediate and tangible. The students understood instantly that this wasn't just a general reward system; it was a system specifically designed to celebrate their hard work in reading. Every time a new prize is put into the chest, the excitement bubbles up again. They treat the act of choosing their prize with such care and seriousness, knowing they truly earned it. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this powerful and positive transformation possible. Your generosity is fostering confident, motivated, and successful readers. We are all deeply grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1756486414403,"projectUrl":"project/small-rewards-big-motivation/9654960/","projectTitle":"Small Rewards, Big Motivation!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Blackmon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2865009_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756258622762","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-dblackmon"},{"teacherId":2324186,"projectId":9547970,"letterContent":"These supplies have been so amazing! Novels expose students to rich vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and diverse writing styles, which help strengthen their reading comprehension and overall literacy skills. Through engaging plots and characters, students practice critical thinking as they analyze themes, make inferences, and draw connections between the story and the real world. This not only improves their academic performance but also builds confidence in their ability to tackle longer, more challenging texts.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, novels open the door to empathy and imagination. When students step into the lives of characters from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, they gain new perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
