At the beginning of the year, I bought each of my students a pair of headphones from the store. They weren’t the best, but they were what I could afford. These headphones didn’t last very long, as my students only had about 2 months of use from them. In order to track growth, my students take the MAP test at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. Students take this test on their iPads. For students to be successful, they need headphones to hear the questions being read to them. We are blessed to have iPads for each individual student, yet many students are not able to afford durable headphones. The iPads are used often in our reader’s workshop block because of the various apps and reading programs that really engage the students. In most of these programs, the books are read to students while they follow along. While this is a great literacy center, it’s conflicting when 5 students are trying to listen to different books at the same time without headphones. I am usually left with no choice but to ask students to turn down iPads because they cannot all listen to the books without distracting each other and everyone else in the room. Each student having their own pair of dependable headphones would make a world of a difference in our classroom.
