When the supplies arrived, the kids were super excited to see cardstock, scissors, and art materials instead of standard math worksheets. Right away, they wanted to know if they were actually going to build and design their own snack boxes. For the project, students acted as packaging engineers to design two different snack containers that held the exact same volume—one standard box and one unique shape, like a cylinder or pyramid. It was great watching them draw out their 3D nets on cardstock, run the math for their surface area, and add creative brand logos with \"Math Facts\" labels. Calculating which box used less material really helped them connect our geometry formulas to real-world costs and environmental waste. Right now, we're finishing up with a classroom \"Grocery Store\" walk where students inspect each other's designs to vote on the most efficient package. Up next, we'll be discussing why real store products are packaged the way they are and how engineers work to reduce material waste. Scissors, glue, highlighters, and pens allow anything from annotating text for improved reading comprehension, to cutting out graphic organizers that can make a difference in how students absorb and recall information when learning a language. Peer-review has been made easier with these tools, allowing students to color code, and experience hands-on learning and focus.\r\n\r\nThe skills for bigger projects are built in the daily smaller projects we trust students to build. Digital platforms which they normally rely on will create slides, templates, and infographics in a matter of seconds with virtually no thinking. The art supplies allowed a level of craftsmanship for their thinking as well as facilitating more opportunities for collaboration and creativity. The presentations they did for their original artistic expressions of themes and characterization were so much more energetic and lively because they were explaining something they made through a design process rather than the click of a button.\r\nThank you so much for your investment in the critical thinking and creativity of my students this year.
