Because of you, students have access to paper, pencils, and markers.\r\n\r\nThese resources are used daily as students respond in handwriting to thought-provoking prompts, complete creative challenges, and take notes during lessons. Writing by hand helps students slow down, process ideas more deeply, and build both confidence and focus. With a pencil in hand and paper in front of them, students are able to organize their thoughts, practice fine motor skills, and express themselves in ways that feel personal and authentic. My favorite part of the donation is that I am able to see into the students' ability to compose sentences without grammar checks and technology assisting them. I can see their true ability and therefore support their educational needs. It is valuable data that I cannot get when they use their devices to write.\r\n\r\nThe dry erase markers allowed students to share ideas, brainstorm visually, and engage more fully in weekly challenges. These tools encourage participation and help make learning feel accessible and enjoyable for the students.\r\n\r\nYour donation ensures that students always have the materials they need to show their thinking. The time saved from having to find pencils, is appreciated! The common excuse of, \"I don't have a pencil\" was NOT once used in my class this year! Adolescent students have a difficult time understanding language when it is use in the abstract - but this way, they are exposed to figurative language throughout the entirety of a story - and are far more interested in deconstructing and understanding it because it is used to tell a story.\r\n\r\nLikewise, I specifically chose the novel-in-verse 'Emmy in the Key of Code' because it taps into computer coding - a skill that is taught now as early as middle school as well as an important skill many students feel like will impact their future. \r\n\r\nI am trying to implement more relevant texts in my curriculum - this includes graphic novels. While teaching classic literature has its time and place, its important that English class stays relevant to our current generation of 8th graders and we need to incorporate reading materials they are interested in. They LOVED the graphic novel adaptation of Jason Reynolds' \"Long Way Down\"!\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is twofold - I encourage students to read their own self-selected texts, but sometimes we also read other works as a class or in small reading groups. Students then complete graphic organizers or quickwrites based off of ideas or themes in the class readings. \r\n\r\nUltimately, your donation helped give 150 students access to high-quality and high-interest reading materials.
