My 5th grade math students are excited learners. They have often struggled in math and come in to class feeling like math is hard, or they are not good at math. They test well in math, but don't really understand the concepts or feel comfortable with number fluency and in general playing with numbers. These students lack mathematic confidence. These 10-11 year olds come from middle income families and come to class with a great deal of real world experience. They love to read and write stories and will tell you that language arts is their strongest subject. They are well behaved and energetic students who, for the most part, have been attending our small urban school together since Kinder. With only 50-70 students in each grade level, our small, quaint school instills a caring and supportive learning environment. They just lack confidence in math.
