We had quite the change up in staff this year, first with three new teachers in new positions, and then with one teacher leaving only a few months into the school year. \r\nThe loss of the teacher occurred right as the fundraiser was funded, with the items arriving only a few days later. As these items were meant to help our students build self-regulation strategies and increase coping skills in stressful situations they could not have come at a better time. \r\nMany of our students experienced self-regulation struggles during this time, and it helped to have items such as the sensory tent, light tiles, or puzzle balls to help our students through this difficult transition.\r\nAs one of the staff that left last year was the behavior lead, we also lost many of the sensory items that our students have used in past years. Much of these items were meant to replace the items that were lost in that transition, which they did. \r\nOur students thrive on routine and consistency, and many of the students remembered the items that were available from the behavior lead, with your help I was able to replace those items quickly and help our students to start the school year strong with much of the consistency and familiar items and routines they were used to. \r\nIt has meant the world to us that we have been able to endure these difficult transitions with your help. Our students are having a great year, and so much of that is due to your support.\r\n\r\nThank you! \r\nRose Creek Elementary Autism Support Classroom","fullyFundedDate":1760718925429,"projectUrl":"project/help-support-our-students-with-autism/9632444/","projectTitle":"Help Support Our Students With Autism!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Blaisdell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9131018"},{"teacherId":10177901,"projectId":9672509,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the science equipment our classroom received, including spray bottles, plant cups, and storage totes. These resources have had a significant, positive impact on both our science curriculum and the overall organization of our learning environment.\r\n\r\nThe spray bottles and plant cups have been instrumental in supporting our hands-on science experiments, particularly during our plant growth and water cycle investigations. Students were able to actively participate in watering, observing, and recording plant changes, deepening their understanding of scientific concepts through direct experience. The durable plant cups allowed us to conduct multiple experiments simultaneously, fostering collaboration and critical thinking among students.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the storage totes have greatly improved our classroom organization. Having a designated space for science materials has made it easy for students to access equipment independently and return items after use. This not only maximized instructional time but also promoted responsibility and care for shared resources.\r\n\r\nOverall, the new equipment has enriched our science instruction, encouraged student engagement, and helped maintain an orderly and efficient classroom. This project helped students strengthen their literacy skills while deepening their understanding of the people and places that make up our community.\r\n\r\nTeaching reading involves intentionally building skills that help children understand how books work and how meaning is created. Through carefully chosen mentor texts about neighborhoods, families, and everyday life, students practiced key first-grade skills such as identifying the beginning, middle, and end of a story, describing characters and settings, and making text-to-self connections. Students were also able to build their vocabulary through exploring sentence structure, and practicing phonics patterns in authentic ways. Reading these stories helped students see how authors turn real-life experiences into meaningful narratives. These are skills they then used to design their own pages for our class storybook.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom during this project was active and joyful. Each day included whole-group read-alouds where students listened closely, discussed ideas, and shared personal connections to the stories. During small-group and independent reading time, students revisited books, practiced reading fluently, and used illustrations to support comprehension. Books were often spread out across tables and the floor as students talked with peers, pointed out details, and excitedly shared favorite pages. Reading became a social experience that encouraged curiosity, confidence, and collaboration.\r\n\r\nThe writing and art components of the project allowed students to take ownership of their learning. Each child chose a meaningful place or person from their neighborhood and created a written page and illustration to contribute to our class-published storybook. Students worked through the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, and illustrating. They also learned how to express their learning, their ideas and experiences are worth sharing. The final storybook is still in progress but will be a powerful reflection of our diverse classroom and the community we are proud to be part of.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially impacted by the new books and project structure. Some students who were hesitant readers at the beginning of the year became more engaged because the stories felt familiar and relevant to their own lives. One student eagerly reread neighborhood-themed books to find inspiration for their writing, while another used pictures to confidently retell stories and explain ideas aloud. More advanced readers challenged themselves with deeper discussions and longer written responses.\r\n\r\nYour support made it possible for our students to see themselves as readers, writers, and storytellers. This project did more than build literacy skills, it strengthened our classroom community and gave every child a voice. We made a total of 80 snowmen for our Autism Support classes and for each of our own trees. Next we will write elf letters to each student in the ASC classes; we've already selected our elf names!\r\nThe students have really enjoyed using the new indoor recess supplies.
