Dominoes and dice can be used to help students visualize and work with fractions and decimals in an engaging way through game play and multiple exposures to fraction/decimal multiplication and division. These two operations are generally two sticking points for many fifth grade students. Using stop watches and kitchen scales give the students real-life applications for math and science when we weigh chemicals or ingredients for making salt dough, timing magnetic race cars or static electricity races, or when we are looking at variations within a species of apples based on their weight, circumference, and physical coloring. In my classroom, students participate in hands-on learning and integration across the curriculum. These resources will help my students see the connections between math, science, and the real world. Their learning will be infused with excitement.
