We are currently using the keyboards to explore basic music theory, note identification, and finger coordination. The wooden sticks (rhythm sticks) have become an essential tool for our daily rhythm exercises, helping students master steady beats and syncopation through interactive tapping games. During our first \"Rhythm and Melody\" workshop, the magic really came alive. I had half of the class use the wooden sticks to establish a steady four-beat drum pattern, while the other half of the class took turns playing a simple five-note melody on the keyboards. The moment their separate parts locked into a cohesive piece of music, the students' faces lit up with pure pride. The magnetic easel you funded for us has been in use every single day since it arrived. Whereas beforehand, teachers could only display writing and pictures to the children on the SmartBoard, which isn't for student interaction, now there is a place in the room where \r\nthe children and adults are able to use it as a shared interactive space for large and small group literacy, math, and social emotional learning. \r\n\r\nOn the large easel, we manipulate our schedule to go over the events of the day. Because it has hooks for us to hang multiple items from it, the children also adjust their photo under the emotion they feel most aligned with each day, using the easel as a social emotional landing space. Throughout the day they often walk by to adjust their photo as their feelings shift to different emotions. Being able to hang it on the easel gives the children autonomy over this important part of their development: naming and identifying how they feel. \r\n\r\nIn a PreK classroom, play is learning. Our toys are our teaching tools. Similarly, this easel has created space for the children to begin playing independently. This week a student who feels confident writing her letters stood at the easel and scribed each letter that had been called in the class Bingo game, to create a visual reference for her classmates to track their game progress. \r\n\r\nThis multipurpose tool has already unlocked so much fun and possibility in our classroom, and we are so excited to continue out the year strong in preparation for Kindergarten.
