My first graders are so excited about our new chapter books. Learning to read chapters books is a huge feat for 6 and 7 year olds. They feel so great and accomplished when they can read a chapter book. When teaching the students to start reading longer texts, we do it together so that they can all read a short section and then discuss it with each other in order to ensure that they are comprehending what they've read. This is important because the new chapter books have far less pictures than the books they are used to reading. Once we've read a couple of chapter books together and the students understand how to monitor and check their own understanding, they start to read them in pairs. This is where we're at and that is why this project contained two copies of each of the books selected. \r\n\r\nMy students choose to read books every day. When they have a choice in tasks, which include writing sentences on white boards using our sight words, working on reading lessons on their computers, writing sentences and drawing pictures in their notebooks, or reading books, they all choose to read books. They love reading so much, which makes me so happy, and are so excited about these new ones to finish off the year.","fullyFundedDate":1773838948461,"projectUrl":"project/lets-read/10142896/","projectTitle":"Let's Read!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McGaughey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9496712_orig.jpg?crop=907,908,x0,y33&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710970949981","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9496712"},{"teacherId":7607545,"projectId":9988823,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and support of our classroom through the \"Snacks, Stories, and Student Success\" project. Because of you, my students are experiencing reading in a whole new and exciting way.\r\n\r\nThe Kindle you provided has been a game changer for our classroom. Many of my students do not have access to this type of technology at home, so having the opportunity to explore books digitally has made reading feel special and motivating. The Kindle allows students to easily browse and choose books that match their interests and reading levels, which has increased both their independence and enthusiasm for reading. Features like adjustable text size and built-in dictionaries have also been incredibly helpful, especially for my emergent bilingual students, as they can better access and understand the text.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is the ability to \"discover\" books on their own. They love scrolling through options, finding new stories, and revisiting their favorite books again and again. This sense of choice and ownership has made reading something they look forward to every day, especially during Nevada Reading Week, when their excitement was at an all-time high.\r\n\r\nI have seen several students, particularly those who were previously reluctant readers, gravitate toward the Kindle. These students are now eager to participate in reading time, often asking for extra opportunities to use it. Some of my emergent bilingual students have especially benefited, as they feel more confident navigating texts and are more willing to take risks with reading. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence grow.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the technology, the snacks have been a wonderful motivator and a joyful addition to our classroom community. They have helped reinforce positive behaviors and celebrate student effort, making our learning environment even more supportive and encouraging.\r\n\r\nYour kindness has truly made a difference. You have not only provided tools for learning, but you have helped foster a love of reading, confidence, and excitement in my students. The Yacker Tracker has also been an exciting new addition to our class. The students were really excited about it when I first set it up. It is such a great visual reminder for them to keep their voices down inside the classroom. \r\n\r\nWe will continue to use the materials every day.
