In one project, students worked together to learn about the ideas of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, and in another, they explored food production. For both projects, students worked in groups and used the new materials to research, organize their ideas, and complete their group projects. Having these resources available gave students more opportunities to work hands-on and collaborate with one another.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they first saw all of the supplies available for them to use! They immediately wanted to explore everything and figure out how they could use the materials for their projects. One of their favorite supplies was actually the transparent rulers! They thought they were really cool and were excited to use them while working on their projects. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm over materials that helped make learning more interactive and engaging.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building on the skills students practiced during these projects, especially collaboration, research, and presenting their ideas. Students will continue working together on classroom projects where they can use the new resources to organize information, create meaningful products, and demonstrate what they have learned. We have already found lots of ways to use them in our classroom. We use them when we are learning how to annotate texts and take notes in our notebooks. Students created boards showing their goals, interests, and what they hope their future will look like. It was really nice to see how creative and personal each student made their board. We have also been using the materials while learning about post-secondary education options and helping students think about what they might want to do after high school.\r\n\r\nIt has been great having these resources available because my students can be more hands-on and creative instead of always working from a worksheet or a screen. It is a college-level course with an emphasis on reading and lectures so taking time to make a creative, hands-on project to help learn the brain terms was well-received. As there are limited funds for teachers and many of our students are free and reduced lunch, this project would not have happened without your generous support.
