String basses are an important part of the string orchestra, and yet our string program in Norwalk struggles to recruit bass students at the elementary level. Part of the reason is due to the expense and difficulty of getting a bass back and forth to school. Many students in our district take the bus and therefore cannot bring a bass with them due to lack of space. For other students, the expense of renting a bass is far too great for their families to handle. While some schools in Norwalk do have a school-owned bass, most only have one to share among the 50 to 80 string students in the school. These school basses are old, worn and do not produce a quality sound crucial to keeping a new string student engaged and interested. Helping our string program fund-raise this money will help us to provide some new basses to some of the elementary schools in our district. We hope over time to raise enough money to purchase 12 basses total! Through this fundraiser we hope we can excite new students to take up the bass and keep our string program thriving!
