For 4th graders, biography research can often feel daunting, but these books have transformed \"work\" into a \"quest for discovery.\" In our classroom, reading now looks like a room full of explorers. You'll see students sprawled on the rug or tucked under their desks, completely engrossed in the lives of trailblazers like Temple Grandin, Albert Einstein, or Malala Yousafzai. Because these books are written in an engaging, narrative style, my students are moving beyond just \"finding facts\"—they are actually connecting with the human experiences, failures, and triumphs of these historical figures.\r\n\r\nFrom a teaching perspective, these texts are incredible tools for developing high-level literacy skills. We are using them to practice identifying character traits, understanding chronological text structures, and distinguishing between primary and secondary sources. My students are learning how to synthesize information from the \"Fast Fact\" sidebars and maps included in these books to build a complete picture of a person's impact on the world. This series has made the complex task of taking notes and citing evidence much more approachable for 9 and 10-year-olds.\r\n\r\nThe impact is most visible in my reluctant readers. I have several students who used to struggle to finish a chapter book, but because these titles are so visually inviting and fast-paced, they are now racing through them. One student in particular, who usually finds non-fiction \"boring,\" spent an entire hour telling me about the childhood of Jackie Robinson, inspired by the \"Who Was\" book he just finished. Your gift hasn't just provided books; it has provided the \"spark\" that many of my students needed to see themselves as researchers and lifelong readers. Because of you, our classroom has been transformed into a hands-on laboratory and an engineering hub. The impact of these resources—the Owl Pellets and LEGO sets—has been immediate and profound.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes arrived and I revealed the owl pellets, the reaction was a hilarious mix of \"Eww!\" and \"Wait, can I touch it?\" The initial hesitation quickly turned into pure fascination. Watching twenty-four 4th graders lean in with tweezers and magnifying glasses was a sight to behold.\r\n\r\nOne student, who usually struggles to stay engaged during textbook readings, was the first to find a perfectly intact rodent skull. The look of absolute wonder on his face as he used a bone chart to identify his find was priceless. He wasn't just reading about a food chain; he was holding the evidence in his hands.\r\n\r\nStudents will be tasked with building \"earthquake-proof\" towers, which we will test using a shake table. Your gift has provided the foundation (literally!) for these kids to think like real scientists and engineers every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1769964029800,"projectUrl":"project/recess-builders-owl-sleuths-learning/9932241/","projectTitle":"Recess Builders + Owl Sleuths: Learning Through Play","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Prachyl","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5803080_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661569123591","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-prachyl"},{"teacherId":6962696,"projectId":9037276,"letterContent":"I teach a class of special needs students that sometimes get frustrated or upset. Having tools to help them return to calm so that work can be completed is a tremendous help. My students were so excited when the boxes started to arrive. They all wanted to see what was new. They all were so excited to use the sensory tools that had arrived and were new to them. \r\n My students really enjoy the infinity cubes and they really help them stay on task as they get to move their hand. The putty has also been a big hit as many need that stimulation to help with staying on task. The sensory squares help some of my students meet a need that is something that they like to feel. Those squares are very calming and restoring to some of them. The ball pit is also a big hit when they need a moment to bring themselves back to calm after getting frustrated. \r\n To have all of these items is a huge benefit to my students and something that was unreachable until this project was met. I sincerely appreciate all of these items and the way that they help us daily in our classroom. These sensory items have made a huge difference in the day to day life in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1740022392731,"projectUrl":"project/exceptional-students-sensory-wonderland/9037276/","projectTitle":"Exceptional Students Sensory Wonderland","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6962696"},{"teacherId":5803080,"projectId":9178967,"letterContent":"I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for helping bring some awesome new things into our classroom! When my students walked in and saw the wobble stools, math tools, and STEM supplies, their eyes lit up. They were so excited—some even said it felt like Christmas! The wobble stools have been a huge hit. My students love being able to move a little while they work, and I've noticed they're staying more focused during lessons. It's such a great way to support all types of learners.\r\n\r\nWe've already put the new STEM materials to good use! One of our favorite projects so far was a challenge to build the tallest freestanding tower using only index cards and tape. You should've seen the teamwork, the laughter, and the creative thinking happening around the room. It was such a fun and meaningful learning moment, and it never would've happened without your support.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're working on measurement and geometry. The students are using tools to explore shapes and angles, and next up is a fun project where they'll design their own playgrounds using what they've learned. These resources have brought our lessons to life, and I can't thank you enough for helping make that happen!","fullyFundedDate":1742964863585,"projectUrl":"project/math-stem-motion-tools-for-success/9178967/","projectTitle":"Math, STEM & Motion: Tools for Success!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Prachyl","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5803080_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661569123591","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-prachyl"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_86934","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":375,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":49,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.7,"schoolId":86934,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Nicoma Park Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Nicoma Park Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/choctaw-nicoma-park-schools/nicoma-park-interm-school/86934"}
