We've been working on place value and double digit addition, and the students love having their base 10 blocks to help build the numbers. Many of my students need to see it, touch it, and build a number, and having these base 10 blocks is already making a difference!\r\n\r\nOur classroom number line is great, too. Just yesterday, I saw a table using it while they were discussing the correct answers to the problem set they were working on. It especially wonderful to use when rounding, too. They can see the number in between the two tens. \r\n\r\nNow that we have a few weeks of rituals and routines behind us, I'm about to surprise them with our first set of games, too. Learners are even searching for nature's science materials during recess to bring into the classroom to create slides and view with magnification. They leave no leaf unturned, literally. \r\n\r\nMagna Tile cars are sparking creative ideas as well as challenging students to create a car that can go further and faster. Students have started collecting data to find the best way to build. I love when creativity and science collide. \r\n\r\nAll of the materials have given us a great start to our year. As a teacher, I am especially thankful for the brand new binders and classroom materials I can provide to students that were not able bring in their own. Binders hold their STEM project plans for completing the engineering design process. The remaining shelving is being used to hold projects as they build. Our 3rd grade students designed simple machine playground models out of recycled materials and having extra storage to keep projects safe was amazing!\r\n\r\nOur classroom typically serves over 100 students, and our shelving is a simple but much needed solution for our STEM needs.
