As a Gifted Resource Enrichment classroom, we use a hands on approach to learning. Students are given opportunities to create and express. Materials from this project continue to bring life to our classroom daily!\r\n\r\nOur microscope has been such a source of excitement. Learners are even searching for nature's science materials during recess to bring into the classroom to create slides and view with magnification. They leave no leaf unturned, literally. \r\n\r\nMagna Tile cars are sparking creative ideas as well as challenging students to create a car that can go further and faster. Students have started collecting data to find the best way to build. I love when creativity and science collide. \r\n\r\nAll of the materials have given us a great start to our year. As a teacher, I am especially thankful for the brand new binders and classroom materials I can provide to students that were not able bring in their own. We have begun organizing student binders for STEM projects and hands on materials for those projects onto our shelves. \r\n\r\nStudents are able to identify their binders by name and grade levels quickly now. Binders hold their STEM project plans for completing the engineering design process. The remaining shelving is being used to hold projects as they build. Our 3rd grade students designed simple machine playground models out of recycled materials and having extra storage to keep projects safe was amazing!\r\n\r\nOur classroom typically serves over 100 students, and our shelving is a simple but much needed solution for our STEM needs. We have used the carpet area for setting up and carrying out activities to support motor planning development and increasing active attention. The students take pride in showing their ability to identify letters in their name on the carpet and demonstrating how they can jump from one letter to another and say the name of the letter and identify the letter sound. The oral motor chewies have been very beneficial in providing a safe alternative for students to obtain oral input during class time and not place in edible items in their mouth. The puzzle organizer has enabled therapist to quickly locate puzzles that will capture a student's attention and support active engagement. Lastly the sensory pillow has been placed in our quiet sensory area. It has provided a quiet, comfortable, and safe area for students to recharge when they are feeling stressed. Students were first introduced to them in another teacher's classroom, and they really enjoyed the 'reindeer hunt\". The class was absolutely thrilled when I reintroduced them a month or so later. However, they struggled to complete the tasks, and for some of my students, they got very frustrated.\r\n\r\nBut that's okay. One of the things we talk about when we are focusing on Engineering or Coding is that making mistakes is part of the process. True learning doesn't happen when we get things right the first time - it happens when we persevere and problem-solve and overcome our challenges. \r\n\r\nSo these little robot bees are more than just a screen-free coding tool. They help develop character skills and critical thinking.
