Students are learning about how living and nonliving components interact by designing, building, and observing their terrariums. They are adding soil, plants, decomposers, and other organisms and then monitoring how the ecosystem changes over time. One of my favorite moments was watching students carefully decide where each part of their terrarium should go because they were beginning to understand that every organism has a role in the ecosystem.\r\n\r\nThey were immediately excited! For many of my students, especially those who learn best through hands-on experiences, having actual materials to build with made the science feel real. They couldn't wait to get started, and there was a lot of discussion about what organisms they could include and how they could keep their ecosystems alive. The classroom quickly changed from students simply learning about ecosystems to students actually becoming ecosystem designers and scientists.\r\n\r\nThe next step is for students to become long-term observers of their terrariums. They will collect data, record observations, and look for evidence of interactions between organisms and their environment. Students will be investigating questions such as what happens when conditions change, how matter cycles through the ecosystem, and how living things depend on one another. Ultimately, they will use their observations and evidence to explain how their terrarium functions as a small, interconnected ecosystem.","fullyFundedDate":1776092257632,"projectUrl":"project/biosphere-iii/10152696/","projectTitle":"BIOSPHERE III","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rylands","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9257903_orig.jpg?crop=2262,2262,x0,y82&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694093649992","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9257903"},{"teacherId":8053141,"projectId":10124030,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping bring these high-interest, dog-themed novels into our classroom! They can explore active volcanoes, witness tectonic plate movement, and safely experience natural phenomena that would otherwise be impossible to observe firsthand. In physics and engineering lessons, students can interact with virtual inventions and simple machines such as catapults, allowing them to see forces, motion, and energy transfer in action.\r\n\r\nThese virtual field trips have dramatically increased student engagement, curiosity, and participation.
