We read the book Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. They learned about what makes a poem a poem and why writers write. The students were excited to write their own shape poem like the character Jack in the book. I made them stand out by backing them with the bright paper on the bulletin board. I'm able to laminate a lot of supplemental materials for the students to use hands-on like bookmarks during independent reading. They use their yellow highlighters to cite evidence and the pocket folders are used to keep their materials organized. \r\n\r\nOur next steps will be to use our great donations during our project on animal behaviors and defense mechanisms. Our kindergarten classroom is already seeing a huge improvement in organization, and the difference is truly incredible.\r\n\r\nThese seat sacks have provided every child with their own dedicated, clutter-free space to keep their books, folders, and supplies. We were able to get them set up immediately, and I can tell you that our daily routines are already running so much more smoothly.\r\n\r\nNow, instead of precious learning time being spent searching for misplaced items, my students are focused on their work. The new organization has dramatically reduced the clutter in our small classroom, creating a visibly calmer and more focused learning environment—it's amazing to see!\r\n\r\nEven better, my young learners are already showing signs of greater independence. They are taking pride in keeping their own space tidy and are learning responsibility for their belongings, which are vital life skills.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this essential change a reality. Your support is making a tangible, immediate difference in the lives of my kindergarteners in West Philadelphia.\r\n\r\nYour donation means that every single student in my classroom will now have their own set of headphones.\r\n\r\nIn our busy classroom, these aren't just pieces of equipment; they are tools for focus and personalized learning. They will transform our instruction by allowing my bright, curious students to fully immerse themselves in engaging activities on our Chromebooks—from practicing critical literacy skills to enjoying engaging read-alouds and exploring educational apps. In an active, sometimes noisy, environment, having this quiet space to concentrate is truly essential for these young learners.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students from underserved communities, having access to their own high-quality learning tools like these headphones can make all the difference. You are helping to create a more focused, effective, and inclusive learning environment right here in West Philly, giving my students the best chance to succeed academically and develop lifelong learning skills.\r\n\r\nWe can't wait to put these headphones to use! I will be sure to share updates and photos once they arrive and are being used in our classroom so you can see the direct impact of your kindness.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in our classroom and our students. We do not waste time searching for pencils in order to complete assignments or take notes. We were learning what makes a poem a poem and what inspires poets to write. We ended the unit with the students writing their own poems. When their glasses, lanyards and pencil pouches were given to them they were very excited! Each time we write they put on their thinking glasses and lanyards that have their photos saying they are amazing authors. This makes a difficult task for them fun and exciting. My goal was to make writing fun and special with the glasses and lanyards. They seem excited about writing. Our classroom had a district walkthrough visit and they loved the idea when they saw all the students wearing their glasses and lanyards. They also loved how they all had reading folders and pouches containing their highlighter and other writing tools. Our next lesson is researching about an animal so they can become experts about the animal's defense mechanisms. They will also write a narrative using the same animal as the main character of their story. The folders help to keep their loose papers organized by subjects. The children are very thankful for the things you have given them. Their appreciation shows when they are engaged and collaborating in groups to do an activity.","fullyFundedDate":1725740013316,"projectUrl":"project/a-thirst-for-learning/8624729/","projectTitle":"A Thirst For Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Milburn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4649626_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723570553482","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4649626"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_90715","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":285,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":93,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.2,"schoolId":90715,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Morton McMichael Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Morton McMichael Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/philadelphia-city-school-district/morton-mcmichael-elementary-school/90715"}
