When I told them we were dissecting sharks at the beginning of the year, my high school students were immediately excited. There were a lot of surprised reactions and a lot of curiosity right away. It definitely grabbed their attention in a way that typical materials don't.\r\n\r\nWe used that excitement to jump into our unit on sharks, adaptations they have, and how they fit into the phylum Chordata. Instead of starting with a lecture, we were able to begin with discussion. Students were more willing to participate, ask questions, and share what they already knew. That initial excitement made it much easier to talk about bigger ideas like classification, vertebrates, and how sharks are similar to and different from other chordates.\r\n\r\nNext, we're building on that by continuing our work with classification and having students apply what they've learned about adaptations in sharks to other organisms. Thank you again for helping bring that excitement into our classroom. Since the pandemic, we have seen significant drops in the ability to read. This includes reading with fluency and reading comprehension. At my school we have developed a reading plan that includes intensive 1:1 tutoring for lowest readers and then a reading class. In the reading class we use the ipads in station activities that are centered around an app called Word Builder. WordBuilder Intervention is a free research-based instructional tool to help adolescent struggling readers break down, build, and spell multisyllabic words. It is designed for teacher-led, direct instruction delivered in small groups or one-on-one with struggling readers.\r\n\r\nWe had a goal of seeing 50% of our students showing significant gains in reading.
