Six years ago, our school was a drastically different place than it is now. It was considered "failing". The school was issued a federally funded grant to make big changes fast. A new principal was put in charge, 50% of its staff had to be let go, two coaches were hired. There was a huge movement towards Balanced Literacy where teachers began to teach the reader and the writer, not the text. Now, the hallways are calm. Students race to the library before school and at lunch. Reading is cool. Teachers walk their classes down to the cafeteria for lunch and for PE to prevent bullying but we still have a long way to go.
