The competitive and engaging nature of these games motivates preteens to actively experiment with language in a low-pressure environment, which makes learning feel less like a chore and more like a pleasurable activity. In games like Boggle, students must rapidly form words from a grid of random letters, which requires quick word retrieval from memory, a skill crucial for verbal fluency in everyday communication. The tactile and visual manipulation of letters also reinforces an understanding of word patterns and structures, leading to stronger phonics awareness and fewer spelling errors in their written work. \r\nFurthermore, these games promote essential higher-order thinking skills and social interaction. Games such as Upwords and Boggle demand strategic thinking, problem-solving, and pattern recognition to maximize points, which are transferable cognitive skills beneficial across all academic subjects. When played in groups, these games encourage communication, negotiation, and teamwork, allowing students to articulate their reasoning and clarify misunderstandings without fear of judgment. This social aspect not only builds confidence in speaking and listening abilities but also helps students develop emotional resilience and learn from their peers, creating a well-rounded impact on their overall language and communication development.","fullyFundedDate":1760554235735,"projectUrl":"project/reading-isnt-as-easy-as-123/9710249/","projectTitle":"Reading Isn't as Easy as 1..2..3!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Menswar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3404922_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x409,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1717759870397","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3404922"},{"teacherId":6052170,"projectId":9576955,"letterContent":"My students are so excited to come to the library and play games. This will help to build community and acceptance for students who speak these other languages.\r\n\r\nIt is important to help students who are learning languages to have books available to build their comprehension. The students absolutely love using the microbits when coding. They were not very excited about learning to code until we started using the microbits. They are very excited about what they can do. \r\nOne of the first projects we did was to code a game that they alway play and know very well - Rock Paper Scissors. The students had to code the microbits to randomly choose one of three options. They also had to create sounds and display a picture of each option. \r\nThank you again for helping to inspire these kids. They will learn how to think through a problem, come up with solutions, and then put those ideas into action. Many times they will fail at the first or even the second try. I try to encourage them not to give up and to realize that they are learning from their mistakes. Once they finally find a solution they are very excited and want to try another project.\r\nThank you all so very much!! Graphic novels are what they love most, and it is great to start building on their love with books they will enjoy.\r\n\r\nThese books will be flying off the shelves as soon as I can process them into the library today.
