These silent mutes enabled band students to practice their instruments at home without making noise to interrupt their families. The technology is pretty impressive. Brass instruments in particular can be pretty loud. These mutes fit in the end of the instrument and limit 90% of the sound. During the pandemic, these were critical in allowing students to continue making music.\r\nSince then, each year, students request these mutes. I am heartened to see how many students want to practice their instruments at home and look to find ways to make music without disturbing their families. For many of my students, making music goes beyond something they do and becomes a real part of who they are. During the pandemic, these mini-pianos enabled students to take home a small piano so they could practice at home. This generous gift allowed them to keep learning and explore music making on their own. Without this support, there was no way we could have continued teaching piano at that time.\r\n\r\nSince then, these keyboards have served a similar purpose. Most students are playing piano at school, but every so often - there's a kid who is super motivated and passionate. Having these small keyboards to send home offers us the ability to encourage and support their musical development. My students loved reading West Side Story alongside Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. They enjoyed the comparisons of the two stories. West Side Story provided a new outlook on Romeo and Juliet that engaged all of 9th grade students. \r\n\r\nI noticed that reluctant readers were more able to engage with Romeo and Juliet. Reluctant readers and writers were not just understanding the texts, but they were attempting to write more because they had a better understanding of both plays. Having access to this book improved all students including those learning new languages and others with disabilities. As soon as we received these highly popular titles and topics requested by our high school students, and we were able to match each reader's request with the book they asked for. These books have provided representation, culturally relevant themes and relatable characters and settings for students to discuss during our Reading Wednesday sessions.
