These silent mutes enabled band students to practice their instruments at home without making noise to interrupt their families. The technology is pretty impressive. Brass instruments in particular can be pretty loud. These mutes fit in the end of the instrument and limit 90% of the sound. During the pandemic, these were critical in allowing students to continue making music.\r\nSince then, each year, students request these mutes. I am heartened to see how many students want to practice their instruments at home and look to find ways to make music without disturbing their families. For many of my students, making music goes beyond something they do and becomes a real part of who they are.
