Students sometimes struggle to understand the abstract parts of science and biology. So, by growing and taking care of small indoors herb gardens and then helping plants grow in the garden right outside the classroom window, they will have a practical, physical touchstone to relate to as we talk about photosynthesis, the different kinds of plants and how they grow and develop.
Learning to grow a garden of edible plants will also help give them skills to help them in life where food security can be a very real problem. We want our students to have all the skills needed to be as independent as they can be, even if it is as simple as growing their own carrot or pepper.
As a class we will begin by using the Plant Cultivation Starter Kit, potting mix, Heirloom Culinary and Medicial Herb Kit and window boxes to grow an indoor herb garden over the winter as we learn more about plants by in part by using the Gardening Projects for Kids book. Once we know more about how they grow and spring has comes we will put on our Stretch Gripper Glove and take it outside to plant the Non GMO Heirloom Vegetable Seeds and we will see what sprouts.
