For many children, big emotions can make it difficult to communicate, focus, or participate appropriately in the classroom. Having access to a calm, welcoming sensory space gives students an opportunity to step away from the immediate stressor, use sensory tools, calming strategies, and regain a self of control in a supportive environment. \r\n\r\nWe have seen students begin to recognize when they need a break and become more comfortable using the space as a positive coping strategy rather than viewing it as a consequence. The room provides opportunities for students to practice breathing, self-regulation, mindfulness, and other strategies that they can eventually carry with them back into their classrooms and everyday lives. It has become a place where students can feel safe being honest about their emotions without fear or judgement. For many of our children, having access to properly fitting sneakers is about much more than footwear- it is about comfort, confidence, inclusion, and readiness to learn. Students who previously came to school wearing worn, damaged, or ill-fitting shoes are now able to participate more comfortably in daily activities, recess, gym, and classroom movement breaks. Seeing the excitement and pride on their faces when receiving new sneakers was truly moving. \r\n\r\nBeyond the physical benefits, this project has also positively impacted our students emotionally and socially. Many of our children face challenges outside of school, and acts of kindness such as this remind them that they are valued, supported, and cared for by people beyond their immediate community. Instead of a difficult moment derailing their entire morning, they now have the agency to use these tools to find their center and return to learning with confidence.\r\n\r\nThese resources are doing so much more than just providing a temporary \"break.\" They are teaching my students life-long skills in emotional intelligence and self-regulation.
