Students who once hesitated to decode words now eagerly jump into activities that strengthen their letter–sound knowledge, blending, and reading accuracy. These games give them the repetition and confidence they need, all while making learning feel fun and empowering.\r\nLeveled readers have opened the door to meaningful reading experiences for every child. The comfort bags gave my students something tangible to hold onto during a time when so much around them felt uncertain. Seeing their faces light up when they received their personalized bags, teddy bears, blankets, books, and calming activities was incredibly special. For many of my students, these weren't simply school supplies—they were reminders that they were cared for, thought about, and supported by their teacher and community.\r\n\r\nThe books and activities also gave us a way to talk about difficult feelings in a safe and age-appropriate way. My students were able to read, color, write, use sensory tools, and simply take a quiet moment when they needed one. Having these resources available helped create a calmer classroom environment where children could express their emotions while still feeling like they could be six- and seven-year-olds who were there to learn, laugh, and be together.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, our community was later impacted by the Hawk Fire, which was even more devastating and brought another wave of fear, evacuations, loss, and uncertainty for many of our families. After already experiencing the disruption caused by the Bug Fire, this second fire was especially difficult for my young students. The comfort materials became even more meaningful. My classroom became a place where my students could come together, feel safe, and know that someone was there to listen and care for them.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project helped remind my students that they are not alone. Their personalized bags gave them something that was theirs to keep and take home—a small piece of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.
