Kids are forced to read books in school, and that turns a lot of students off from reading for good. Even as adults, they say they will hate reading because they were forced to read books they didn't like when they were in school. I want to give my students choice in their reading. I want them to choose books that they love, that they don't want to put down. Books that make them want to read all the sequels. Reading should be made fun. And that is my goal with my students. One major problem however, is the amount of books we have. We only have 3 or 4 copies of all the books we are reading, and most of them are old. With COVID restrictions, students are not supposed to be sharing materials, and not supposed to be close enough to have to share a book. This will give all my kids their own copies of the books we are reading in book club. Standards that will be addressed are all ELA 5th grade literature standards. From quoting (RL 5.1), theme (RL 5.2), to Point of View (RL 5.6) all standards will be taught while teaching students to want to read, rather than having to read.
