With access to high-interest, nonfiction scientific texts, my students are now exploring topics that genuinely excite them. Many have already discovered books that speak directly to their personal interests as young engineers, scientists, inventors, and environmental thinkers. What makes this library especially powerful is that students are engaging with scientific literature in a calm, pressure-free environment where the goal is simply to enjoy reading. This freedom has opened the door for deeper comprehension, richer discussions, and a more authentic love of science.\r\n\r\nThe new STEM library aligns beautifully with the Next Generation Science Standards by strengthening students' ability to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information—one of the key NGSS science and engineering practices. As students read, they are naturally practicing critical thinking, analyzing real-world phenomena, building background knowledge, and making connections across Earth science, physical science, and life science concepts. This access helps them grow as independent learners, better prepared to engage in investigations, collaborative problem-solving, and evidence-based reasoning.\r\n\r\nI am truly humbled and deeply grateful for this investment in my students. As many of you know, I am a reading interventionist. That means I pull small groups of students to my classroom to work in small groups on gaps in their foundational reading skills. I see 35-40 students a day in my classroom! Often I pull two small groups at a time, so half of the students wait in my library for their group time with me. During that time, they are encouraged to choose a book from my library to read. \r\nAt the beginning of the year, students eagerly picked up books, but I noticed they were quickly getting abandoned. Many of the chapter books I had in my library were not as accessible to students who read below grade level. I also noticed that the popular books were the graphic novels. Graphic novels help make a story come alive. They also help support the story with pictures, which definitely helps a students who is reading below grade level be able to engage with the text in a way that is difficult to do with most chapter books.\r\nSince obtaining so many new graphic novels, there is a resurgence in the reading! Kids grab the books and settle down in my various chairs and seats to enjoy a good story while they wait for their targeted instruction! They've even started posting Book Reviews to share their favorites with their friends. Dogman is a top favorite! \r\nI also need to thank you for the snacks of cereal bars. This visual approach aligns beautifully with the NGSS science and engineering practices, such as developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, and constructing explanations.\r\n\r\nAs students engage in hands-on investigations, they are now better able to represent their observations and findings through rich visual details that bring their science notebooks to life.
