Having high interest books in the classroom will push students along their initial hesitancy with reading. The relatable themes and topics will allow them to identify with the characters. Additionally, these stories will make for great classroom book group discussions, allowing students to speak and learn from each other. An increase with leisure reading within Social Studies will also help my students in other classes. There will be mini lessons around theme (ex. identity, courage, perseverance, equity, justice) and text annotation. Students will practice these through literature they love. These skills are needed at the middle school level and beyond.
