Students have been able to read about current issues, analyze information and evidence, interpret graphics, evaluate claims, and discuss how new ideas and discoveries affect our world.\r\n\r\nThe fidgets have also made a positive difference by giving students appropriate tools to help them maintain focus and regulate themselves during challenging tasks. I have seen students become more comfortable staying engaged during reading, writing, discussions, and independent work when they have a tool that helps them focus.\r\n\r\nThe LEGO building sets have been especially exciting because they give students an opportunity to step away from traditional paper-and-pencil learning and become creators. Students design, build, test, troubleshoot, and make changes to their creations while practicing perseverance and problem-solving. They also have to communicate their ideas, collaborate with classmates, and think critically when something does not work the first time.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped me create a classroom where students understand that learning does not happen in separate boxes. Reading, writing, STEM, creativity, communication, and problem-solving all work together. My students are learning to read like researchers, think like engineers, communicate like scientists, and create like innovators. They immediately began talking about what they could make and how they could connect art to the literature. The classroom became more collaborative as students shared ideas, helped one another, and took pride in their finished work.
