Getting the incubator, the hay, the feeders, and the light allowed us to get a front-row seat to the life cycle of chickens. The students were able to build anticipation as the eggs were delivered and placed in the incubator. They kept a Chicken Journal as they observed the incubation process each day. As they began to hatch, the excitement grew we used a team-building game to name the chickens, this taught them cooperation. Upon hatching, they could observe the chicks each day and work on creating meaningful sentences in their journal along with an illustration. As the chicks were about to depart, they each got to hold one and write a fact or opinion about their experience. Having the chicks most certainly helped build classroom community as well as lent itself to many Reading and Writing activities.
