My students are preparing for the new Smarter Balance testing. With Common Core standards changing the way we look at education, I want to teach my students how to delve deeply into a non-fiction text in order to understand its meaning. We will use these class sets of Scholastic magazines to conduct a teacher-led whole class and independent exploration into theses amazing non-fiction texts. We will read independently or along with the teacher (depending on our reading level), then take comprehension quizzes on them. Then as a class we will discuss the deeper context of the text. Topics included will be questions such as, "How do you think the bird does this? What would you do? What was the main idea of the text?". As I analyze this year's student data, comprehension is where my students are lacking. Being able to conduct a whole class comprehension challenge will give my students the skills they need to prepare them for the ever-changing statewide assessment.
