With your help we have begun our first novel study of the year! Until now, none of our students/classrooms had had the means and opportunity to teach a full novel. Now I have been able to introduce \"The Outsiders\" to my homeroom class with the intention of expanding the offering to other classes in the year to come.\r\n Our discussions this year have included debates over topics like: \"Was Bob the Soc really trying to kill Ponyboy at the fountain?\" and \"Which is better Elvis or the Beatles?\" We have discussed the meaning of the term \"tuff\" as opposed to \"tough.\" We have also discussed who, by today's standards, would be considered \"tuff.\" (This year's top choices were David Goggins and Simone Biles.)\r\n The scholars who have been part of this class have, for the better part, been excited to be part of the discussions and anxious to do the readings! When word leaked [SPOILER ALERT] that Johnny dies, the reactions were priceless- many were in disbelief and actively expressed doubts. As they read on and they came across the church burning and Johnny's hospitalization, you could read the shock on their faces.\r\n In short, their world has been changed by the experience of reading a book set in a time period that predates them by decades, yet still manages to touch on themes to which they can relate. Thank you for helping provide that to experience to them.\r\n I hope that you will consider helping continue that growth and those experiences by considering a donation to my current/next novel project involving the novel \"Freak the mighty.\"","fullyFundedDate":1737128316616,"projectUrl":"project/the-outsiders-urban-youth/9044650/","projectTitle":"The Outsiders & Urban Youth","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Schutte","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp86761_orig.jpg?crop=1397,1397,x128,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565794091092","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrschutte"},{"teacherId":4975368,"projectId":8969252,"letterContent":"As you can see from the pictures, the calculators that you purchased for my students are being used daily in my 7th grade math classes.
