This is a different world in which we live. We are asking our scholars to return to a school building under circumstances which none of us have ever had to endure. Wearing masks, eating lunch in the classroom, keeping a distance from your friends, walking in the hallways in one direction, and not using the drinking fountains. Therefore, I need to supply water bottles to my students to fulfill their needs.
We have to take care of basic needs before students can learn. I specifically remember how hard it was to sit in a classroom and pay attention to the teacher, when I was thirsty. All I could think about was getting a drink of water. For our students, that won't be as simple as going to the fountain to get a drink. The majority of my students are from low income households. Most of them depend on the school for basic nutritional needs. I am certain a water bottle is not going to be top priority in the morning for my students. I need to help nourish and hydrate their minds and bodies, and water plays a vital role in this equation.
I believe my students will work harder knowing their teacher cared enough to make sure they had water to drink. Students will also not be focused on their own discomfort, and they will be able to focus on their academics. I care about my students and think of my students like they are my own.
