Students lit up when they walked in and saw the bright, colorful rug with the smiley faces laid out and the new stools neatly arranged. They were excited to each have their own spot on the rug.\r\n\r\nWe use the rug to create cozy reading, and small group works areas and discussion zones, which have completely changed our classroom dynamic. Our favorite time on the rug is our morning meeting time which provides for a positive start to the day.\r\n\r\nThe calendar has become an important part of our morning routine. Writing is a basic fundamental skill that has gotten away from us, as a society. The importance of speaking correctly and reading at or beyond grade level is directly correlated to writing. \r\nConnecticut Common Core standards provide a framework for young writers to follow. Under the umbrella of, \"Literacy\" we see things like, clearly state your opionion, have a purpose and and write cohesively. Journals like this afford my students to have access to paper. It may sound so mundane but it is essential. \r\nPaper is at a premium and a journal that a students can keep in their desks for their own use is giving them freedom. I encourage my young writers to write not only for assignments but for pleasure. \r\nJournaling can be a bit of zen and offer some solace to students, who didn't necessarily know they needed it.
