Inspired by the Service Stars missions, my students wanted to help care for their school community in a meaningful and practical way. They worked together to organize a station where any student in the school can take a snack when they need one. Throughout the day, students use the station to refuel so they can stay focused, comfortable, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen the snacks arrived, my students were incredibly excited and proud. They immediately began sorting the crackers, chips, fruit snacks, and pretzels, carefully organizing the station and creating encouraging notes for their peers. Many students shared how good it felt to help others and to know their work would support classmates they may not even know. This project sparked powerful conversations about empathy, kindness, and taking care of one another.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students include maintaining the Snack Support Station, monitoring supplies, and continuing to spread awareness about its purpose throughout the school. They are learning responsibility, leadership, and teamwork as they ensure the station remains welcoming and accessible to all. This project has become an ongoing lesson in compassion and community care, driven entirely by student voice and ownership.","fullyFundedDate":1765559004863,"projectUrl":"project/school-snack-support-station/9955341/","projectTitle":"School Snack Support Station","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bourque","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3771938_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1499458802783","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-bourque"},{"teacherId":3771938,"projectId":9811634,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my students are diving into the wonders of STEM through hands-on exploration and creative problem-solving in ways that truly excite them. The journals, pens, and drawstring bags have become an essential part of our daily learning. Students are using their journals to record observations, sketch designs, collect data, and reflect on experiments in real time. The drawstring bags allow them to keep materials organized and ready for investigations, whether we are building, testing, or observing, helping them feel like real scientists and engineers.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were thrilled. They immediately asked when they could start using their journals and proudly labeled them as their science notebooks. Many students who are usually hesitant writers became eager to document their thinking, drawings, and predictions. Having their own supplies gave them a sense of ownership and responsibility, and it was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they realized their ideas mattered enough to be recorded.\r\n\r\nThanks to these resources, our next steps include deeper STEM investigations where students design solutions, test hypotheses, and revise their thinking based on evidence. We are using the journals to track long-term projects, reflect on challenges and successes, and strengthen critical thinking skills. For many students, visual cues like facial expressions and body language are primary ways to understand emotions in others. Without access to these cues, students with visual impairments may face challenges in interpreting social interactions, which can lead to feelings of isolation or misunderstanding. By explicitly teaching emotions through verbal descriptions, tactile materials, role-playing, and technology-based tools, educators can provide students with the vocabulary and strategies to recognize and respond to their own emotions and the emotions of others. This promotes greater social awareness and confidence in navigating relationships.\r\n\r\nMoreover, teaching emotions supports the development of self-regulation skills. When students can identify and label their feelings, they are better equipped to express themselves appropriately and cope with challenging situations. For example, learning the difference between frustration and disappointment can help a student communicate their needs more effectively rather than acting out. This emotional literacy also fosters empathy, allowing students to better understand how their actions affect others and respond sensitively in social contexts.\r\n\r\nFinally, integrating emotional education into the curriculum encourages inclusive classroom environments. Peers without visual impairments can engage in shared learning experiences that highlight diverse ways of understanding emotions, promoting mutual respect and collaboration. Students with visual impairments gain tools to participate fully in social and academic settings, reducing barriers to interaction and building a sense of belonging. Over time, these skills contribute to stronger relationships, improved mental health, and increased independence, laying a foundation for lifelong social and emotional competence.","fullyFundedDate":1756835574673,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-emotions-to-the-blind-and-visua/9358478/","projectTitle":"Teaching Emotions to the Blind and Visually Impaired","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Barron","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7640044"},{"teacherId":9901027,"projectId":9106305,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our 8th grade science classroom! The materials you provided have made an incredible difference in how my students learn and engage with science. We used your donations to create a dedicated \"think space\" in our classroom, an area where students can collaborate, plan their investigations, and work through complex problems together. This space has become the heart of our classroom, and I see students naturally gravitating there during labs to discuss their observations, troubleshoot experiments, and build on each other's ideas.\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were genuinely excited. They immediately wanted to know what we'd be doing with everything, and I could see them looking at our classroom differently, like it was truly their space for exploration. The comfort level in the room has noticeably increased. Students who were previously hesitant to participate are now more willing to ask questions and take risks in their learning. Having the right tools and an inviting space has helped them feel like real scientists.\r\nWe're currently working our way through some hands-on labs that would have been difficult without your support. Next, we'll be diving deeper into chemistry concepts, and the think space will be essential for students to design their own investigations and work collaboratively.
