They quickly became one of the most used tools in our day, especially during reading and intervention time.\r\nI have several students who struggle with reading. Before, some of them would shut down after a few sentences because they were unsure of the words. Now they use the iPad to listen to the story first, then try reading it themselves. One of my quietest students now asks if he can \"try again\" after hearing the model reading. That never happened before.\r\nDuring intervention, the iPad helps students practice phonics and sight words privately, which protects their confidence. They don't feel different, they feel successful. I've seen students who avoided reading volunteers to read with a partner after practicing on the iPad.\r\nWriting has changed too. Students use speech-to-text and can finally get their thoughts onto the page without getting stuck on spelling. \r\nWe also use the iPad during science. Students research simple topics and then explain the concepts to their group. Some of my struggling readers become the \"experts\" because they can replay information and prepare what they want to say. One is used for reading assignments for students to complete throughout the week, and the other cart is used for the weekly math assignments. The books have been a huge success for my students, who are still learning how to read on grade level, and they are getting students engaged and excited to learn how to read more fluently. Finally, students are loving the rewards they can earn for passing daily assignments. The pencils, desk pets, and rainbow scratch paper are a big hit and have increased student engagement and success in the classroom.
