The students immediately connected with the characters, and were eager every day to read more about their relationships. They were devastated when the book ended in a cliffhanger - Jessica and Carlos like each other, but would Carlos ever find out how Jessica felt? What kind of trouble would Carlos get in with Profesor MartÃn for not doing his assignment correctly and writing mean things about his class? My students immediately asked when we could start the next book.\r\n\r\nI am fortunate to be able to loop with my students for 9th and 10th grades. Because I had them again this year, it was a pleasure to be able to bring them the resolution to the story. They were thrilled to learn that we were receiving the books; we did an unboxing the day they arrived, and they wanted to stop what we had been working on to start reading. Seeing this eagerness to jump right into a story was so exciting for me; being able to jump right into the story was incredibly exciting for them. \r\n\r\nTeaching reading in a second language is an interesting balance. We begin with decoding, not unlike learning to read in a first language. However, there is a point when decoding becomes automatic, and the students begin to \"get it\" as we read. The first book in this series gave us that ah-ha moment; this one only deepened it. We were able to discuss the character's motivations, and to really delve into the book in a way we couldn't a year ago. We were able to use multiple tenses as we discussed the book, and the students were able to complete more complex writing to accompany it. \r\n\r\nMy students and I are truly grateful for everyone who was able to help make these moments possible.
