With the introduction of flexible seating, students are now able to choose spaces that best suit their learning styles—whether it's a cozy chair for independent reading, a collaborative spot for group work, or a quiet corner for focused study. This level of autonomy has noticeably boosted student engagement, comfort, and motivation. By fostering a sense of ownership over their learning space, the classroom has become a more inclusive and student-centered environment.\r\n\r\nThe addition of soft lighting has also contributed to creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere. It reduces the harshness of traditional overhead lighting, helping students feel more relaxed and focused. Paired with a diverse selection of books, this new environment encourages a love of reading and deeper exploration of literature. The books have expanded our classroom library, offering students greater access to high-interest texts across various genres and reading levels. We are a veritable whirlwind of activity and learning! My kindergarteners are planning and building bridges for the glass lizard: an reptile that is threatened in Wisconsin due, in part, to their preference for black surfaces - highways and roads- to soak up the sun. The students are engineering designs to keep the lizards from crawling on the roads while simultaneously creating small, lizard sized bridges for them to safely gather sunrays! \r\nMy first graders are studying the bee to figure out how it uses sound and vibrations to open up tomato plants so that they can collect the pollen inside the flower! They wonder about the interconnectivity of the natural world. \r\nMy second graders spent today designing personalized 'fidget pencils' so they can concentrate better when they are reading and writing. During the last semester they were hard at work testing out materials to create a recipe for strong and durable glue with evidence about the properties of each substance - both heated and cooled! \r\nMy third graders are using the concept of balanced forces to create a strong bridge that can hold a container of pennies! Next week they will display their bridges to a real engineer who will give them 'pointers' on their own projects as well as tell them more about what being a real bridge designer is. She will also show them by example that an engineer can be a woman and a mom! \r\nMy fourth graders are building a model of an eyeball and then thinking about what could change (using systems thinking) to allow the eyeball to see in the dark, see more colors, see farther and/or more focused as well as other possible differences within the animal kingdom when it comes to survival in a specific environment. \r\nLast, our fifth graders have been testing out different substances, examining solubility, mixes that can create new substances as well as 'zooming in' to see these substances at the molecular level! They are using the materials donated to invent a phone finder, a wind-powered car and a tool belt for use in the classroom! \r\nWith all of these projects ongoing, students can explore new ideas and use their creativity within the makerspace portion of our classroom. Students were thrilled to get the building rods to create new structures, the magnets and magnet rods to test magnetism, engineering design and creativity. My younger students loved creating a marble maze on the magnetic white board to collaborate to force the balls to go in different areas of longer distances. Some students made a connection using the the cross cutting concept of energy and matter when they used the pixels to create large pictures made from tiny cubes of color! \r\nThe generous donations have enabled the students to dig deeper into their own questions and thinking that originate from their own experiences with tangible malleable tools! They seek out in small groups to solve the mysteries of this wondrous world! \r\nThanks to you, these budding nobel prize winners are on their way to changing the world for the better. \r\nI thank you from the bottom of my heart!","fullyFundedDate":1731533397752,"projectUrl":"project/creativity-and-innovation-are-integral-t/8650830/","projectTitle":"Creativity and Innovation are Integral to STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Severson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8936678"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37153","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":422,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.3,"schoolId":37153,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Huegel Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Huegel Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/madison-metropolitan-school-district/huegel-elementary-school/37153"}
