While paper storage bins and talking pieces may seem simple, they have made a powerful difference in how my students engage with their work and with one another.\r\n\r\nHow the materials are helping students learn:\r\nThe paper storage bins help students keep their notes, practice packets, and ongoing work organized in one consistent place. This structure reduces time spent searching for materials and allows students to focus more fully on learning. When students know exactly where their work belongs, they feel more confident, prepared, and independent.\r\n\r\nThe talking piece balls support structured, respectful discussions at each table. By using a tangible talking piece, students learn to listen actively, take turns speaking, and share their thinking thoughtfully. This helps students clarify their ideas, learn from peers, and deepen their understanding through conversation.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about the project:\r\nStudents are excited by the sense of ownership these tools create. Having personal and shared organizational spaces helps them feel responsible for their learning materials. The talking piece balls also make discussions feel intentional and inclusive, and students enjoy knowing that everyone will have a chance to be heard.\r\n\r\nStudents who have especially benefited:\r\nStudents who struggle with organization or feel overwhelmed by loose papers have shown immediate improvement in readiness and focus. Quieter students, in particular, have benefited from the talking pieces, as they create a safe and predictable way to contribute without feeling rushed or overlooked. At the same time, more outspoken students are learning valuable listening skills.\r\n\r\nThis project has helped create a classroom environment where organization supports learning and respectful discussion strengthens understanding. Thank you for investing in resources that help my students stay focused, confident, and connected as learners.","fullyFundedDate":1766876207300,"projectUrl":"project/clean-clear-desk/9719573/","projectTitle":"Clean Clear Desk","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haines","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7992239_orig.jpg?crop=2903,2903,x535,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632944287098","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7992239"},{"teacherId":7992239,"projectId":7738733,"letterContent":"This project is about helping my classroom feel like a home—a place where students feel safe, welcomed, and ready to learn. After COVID, many of my students experienced school through a screen at home and were later asked to transition back into a traditional classroom setting. This project helps bridge that gap by creating a space that feels comfortable, supportive, and connected.\r\n\r\nHow the technology and materials are helping students learn:\r\nThe area rug will be placed at the front of the classroom to create a welcoming gathering space where students can come together for lessons, discussions, and community-building. Having a soft, inviting space helps students feel calm and grounded, making it easier to focus and engage.\r\n\r\nThe 3D printer and filament allow me to create sensory and fidget tools that support students' focus and self-regulation. For many students, having something small to manipulate with their hands helps them concentrate, listen, and stay engaged during learning. Instead of being a distraction, these tools become supports that help students manage energy and emotions productively.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about this project:\r\nStudents are especially excited by the idea of learning tools being made for them and by their classroom. Knowing that their fidgets and talking pieces are created specifically to support their learning builds ownership and pride. The game element adds joy and connection, bringing moments of laughter and shared experiences that strengthen classroom relationships.\r\n\r\nStudents who have especially benefited:\r\nStudents who struggle with focus, anxiety, or sensory needs have shown strong interest in the sensory tools, while quieter students benefit from the monthly talking pieces that ensure every voice is heard during discussions. These structures help students feel seen, respected, and included. The game provides opportunities for students to connect with peers in a relaxed way, reinforcing a sense of family within the classroom.\r\n\r\nThis project helps transform our classroom into more than just a learning space—it becomes a community. By combining comfort, creativity, and connection, these tools support both academic growth and emotional well-being. Thank you for helping create a classroom where students feel at home, supported, and excited to learn every day.","fullyFundedDate":1693186117185,"projectUrl":"project/make-a-classroom-home/7738733/","projectTitle":"Make a Classroom Home","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haines","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7992239_orig.jpg?crop=2903,2903,x535,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632944287098","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7992239"},{"teacherId":7992239,"projectId":8503076,"letterContent":"This project has been truly transformative for my students by changing how they engage with learning, not just what they learn. While many donors use desks and treadmills in adult workspaces, seeing this kind of flexible technology in a classroom setting can be surprising—but its impact on students has been powerful.\r\n\r\nHow the technology is helping students learn:\r\nThe walking treadmill allows students to move while learning, which supports focus, self-regulation, and cognitive engagement. For students who struggle to sit still or who have excess energy, movement is no longer a distraction—it becomes a tool. As students walk at a gentle pace, they are better able to concentrate on math tasks, follow instructions, and persist through challenging problems. This has led to longer periods of focus and improved retention of material.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about the new products:\r\nStudents are most excited by the freedom of choice these tools provide. The raised desks allow them to stand or sit as needed, adjusting their position throughout the day to stay comfortable and alert. The treadmill, in particular, feels exciting and empowering—it transforms learning into something active and engaging. Students love that learning no longer feels confined to a chair, and they often view this setup as a privilege they take pride in using responsibly.\r\n\r\nStudents who have especially benefited:\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled with restlessness or attention have shown noticeable growth in engagement and confidence. Students who benefit from movement-based learning have especially warmed to the treadmill, using it as a way to stay focused rather than becoming disengaged. Others who experience physical discomfort from sitting for long periods have found relief and renewed attention through the raised desks. These tools have helped students feel seen, supported, and successful in ways that traditional seating could not.\r\n\r\nMy students are incredibly diverse in their abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles, but they share a strong sense of curiosity and resilience. This project honors those differences by removing physical barriers to learning and replacing them with opportunity. By supporting both movement and flexibility, the walking treadmill and raised desks have helped create a classroom environment where students are healthier, more engaged, and better equipped to reach their full potential.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in innovative solutions that put students first—your support is making a lasting difference every day in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1725637065753,"projectUrl":"project/walking-to-learn/8503076/","projectTitle":"Walking to Learn","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haines","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7992239_orig.jpg?crop=2903,2903,x535,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632944287098","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7992239"},{"teacherId":7992239,"projectId":8907361,"letterContent":"This project has made a meaningful difference in how my students experience learning each day. While many donors use technology at home, classroom technology is often less about screens and more about creating the right conditions for learning—and that's exactly what this project has done.\r\n\r\nHow the technology is helping students learn:\r\nThe noise-canceling headphones have become an important learning tool for students who are sensitive to sound or who struggle to focus in a busy classroom. In a middle school setting, there is naturally movement, discussion, and collaboration happening all around. For some students, that background noise can make it difficult to process information or stay engaged. Having access to headphones allows students to take ownership of their learning environment—choosing when they need quiet to focus deeply on math problems, assessments, or independent work. This has increased both their confidence and their ability to stay on task.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about the new products:\r\nStudents are especially excited that these tools show trust and care for their individual needs. The headphones feel empowering—students love that they can independently decide when they need them, rather than being singled out or redirected. The turtle tank filter has also generated a lot of excitement. Our classroom turtle is a favorite, and students take pride in caring for a shared living thing. Seeing the tank stay clean and healthy has made students even more invested in maintaining a positive classroom environment.\r\n\r\nStudents who have especially benefited:\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled with focus during independent work have shown noticeable improvement. Students who are easily overstimulated or who need extra time to process information now complete assignments with greater accuracy and less frustration. Additionally, students who are naturally empathetic and curious have taken leadership roles in monitoring the turtle's environment, checking water quality, and reminding peers of routines. These students have truly \"warmed\" to the responsibility and structure this project provides.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped create a calmer, more inclusive classroom where students feel supported both academically and emotionally. By reducing distractions and fostering responsibility, these simple tools have strengthened focus, independence, and pride in our learning space. The inviting atmosphere has helped students feel more at ease, more confident, and more willing to participate — which has had a powerful impact on their engagement and focus each day. My students especially love the carpet. They use it as a sensory break to help regulate before their next class.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the new materials have made our lessons and daily transitions much more effective. It has made a difference in how students care and ownership of the books, and their engagement in reading when they are able to annotate the texts.\r\n\r\nWe are about a third of the way through the novel, and students are loving it. They are learning through a historical fiction text about the lives of Indigenous people in the United States. The setting is 1932, with a boy and his pop living as hoboes. They've lost their farm because of The Great Depression, and Pop is now on his way to March on Washington to fight for military bonuses for those who served in WWI. Since it is too dangerous for an 11-year old Cal, Cal is sent to Challagi Indian School, were his father attended. \r\n\r\nThrough this book, students have been learning about The Great Depression, the Trail of Tears, The Meriam Report, and the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples. Through nonfiction reading and annotation of the books, the students have developed skills in critical thinking, whole group discussion, developing claims and determining key pieces of evidence. I believe their growth in these skills would not be as great if not for the ability to engage with their own copy of the text. \r\n\r\n\r\nThank you so much.
