Sharing great books is one of the ways a class truly becomes a learning community. I set forth this project now because I know however the 2020-21 school year looks, our learning communities will include families in a way they haven't before. The books I've included in this project connect to our curricular topics including space, the engineering design process, oceans, human rights issues, immigration, and leadership. Additionally, the books I've included are rich texts full of heart. By sharing quality picture books with my 5th graders and their families, we can explore stories that resemble our lives (mirrors), stories that show us a different way of life than our own (windows), and stories that offer us another option for our lives could be (sliding glass doors). My greatest hope as an educator is to imagine and pursue a better world- and empower students with the knowledge that the world they want to live in is within their reach.
